1963: A friend and I were walking across the field somewhere near the motorway at Shevington, a horse approached us and stood there partly blocking our path, so I lifted my camera, set it, clicked the shutter, and seconds afterwards the horse wandered away and carried on grazing.

So it was a moment in time captured forever. None of us would have believed at the time, Peter, that we would see it on the internet. "What's the internet?", we'd have asked. Well the internet has a lot to answer for, but these innocent pictures on Wigan World are its success.

It's a paint pony as the Indians would say, nice shades of black and white.

Yes, wonderfully described Irene and I am still hoping the Scawthorpe History site I have just found will, one day, be as embracing as Wiganworld.
I am hoping to put my memories on there very soon and shall use exoerience of my daily visit to your `Wiganworld`.
Librans, Irene, the scales of justice, a kind heart and a good word for everyone.

Lizzie-down-under, thanks for your comment! You can take the lass out of Wigan, but you can't take Wigan out of the lass. A part of you will always be here.

palomino? where did they originate? quite out-of-place for 50 years ago would it have been?

Sheryl B palomino is a colour not a breed, and the variations of palomino colours are fairly great. Cheers!!

Lizzie D.U.
You seem to know about horses, I have just learned that a Paint / Pinto can be a solid colour if it is registered in America as coming from Pinto stock. H.

Harry, just refreshing my memory, black and white are known as piebalds, any other colour and white are known as skewbald. Pinto or paint are American for any solid colour and white. Pintos can also have different patterns such as the Tobiano pattern. Then there are the Appaloosas that have spots and all sorts of different patterns, blankets, etc. and we're first bred by the Nez Perce Indians.these beautiful gentle horses are my favourite. Hope this helps, cheers

Just to add the Appaloosas are an actual breed and in England they can be called either blue or strawberry roan. Whereas piebalds, skewbalds pintos or paints can be any breed. I have a lovely pic of a horse doing dressage in America and it is a pinto!!!! Cheers!!!
