Does anyone know what this old chimney was for?. It used to be behind the wall near the old Haigh Estate Office on New Road.

Intereting photo. Is it a chimney or an air vent for something below ground?? Is this still there??

The walls in these gardens are hollow and used to be heated this kept the garden frost free and the chimney was where the smoke came out.

The walls were used to grow non-native friut in espallier fashion, (tied back to a trellis or wire structure fixed to the south facing wall and then "trained" along the structure). I've no confirmation that these particular walls were heated, but it seems a plausible explanation as many of these features are present in similar situations this far north.
