The old Empress Mill stands proud next to the canal, anyone remembers the 1o'clock siren that could be heard during the working week, you could hear it for miles.
Nice photo Tom.
Just further down, coming away from the factory, jumped the by-wash on many occasions, going over to a relation in Darlington Street.
I certainly remember the siren as I used to work there. Great folk but not the healthiest of places with all the cotton dust.
was there a pub to the left of this photo
Rappaports siren used to go off around the same time. did a lot of repairs on the roof being close to it did,nt half make you jummp
To the right Cliff, the Rose Bridge inn. It later became a printing works called Clarrington Press.
I remember watching from my Nanna & Grandad's house when this chimney was taken down brick-by-brick. I would imagine it to be around 1978. I also vaguely remember a year or so before that standing at a door to the mill on Anderton Street watching the busy scene inside.
thanks colin its 53 years since i walked down to the cut there
