English Electric Shunter with a 400HP. in line 6.
Did'nt they fit the Gardener engines in these shunters? 6LXB.
Garry, the only engine listed for this loco is the 'English Electric 6 cylinder diesel', with two EE traction motors. The locos were built at Derby Works.
08 815 was always based at Wigan Springs branch
There was a smaller type of this kind of locomotive, It's function was, to shunt wagons, into the Wagon Works, in Spring View, which was situated at the rear of St Mary's Church. I cannot remember whether it was in the late 40s, or early 50s.
There was one that I rode in many years back, and it was like riding in a large steel can, and loads of vibration, that one I remember had a M.A.N. turbo. engine of about 330 HP. It was a Diesel hydraulic 0-4-0, and had Voith transmission, Loco was 'North British' built. Voith transmissions used to be in Scotland, don't know if they still are. Nice gearboxes on buses, don't know about locos.
Peter. When you refer to the old iron bridge. Is this the bridge that you came to after walking along the passageway, along side of the County Cinema? Many times I've been encased in smoke as I had watched the locomotives pass underneath. If indeed this is the bridge.
The photo was taken from the bridge which went from North Western station over the adjacent sidings and also the lines into Wallgate station eventually bringing you out on King Street.
David mentioned the old iron bridge Albert.
Thank you David/Peter. Sorry David, relating to the mix up I made, as to who had contributed the photograph. Must be senile decay!. It is 49 years since I lived in Wigan.
