That was the only pub I was ever refused a drink in, I had been to register for my national service and called in on my way home, the landlord refused to serve me, he said I didnt look old enough despite me showing him my conscription papers, That was in 1956/7

Blue Ball? Inn, I thought that was an odd name, if you look closely you can see it's The Blue Bell Inn.

It is Bluebell Josh..I thought it was a strange name...an easy mistake I suppose.

Dohhhh Pressed an a instead of e <g> I was friends with a boy who lived there, his name was Michael Presho?(or something similar) That was early 1950's He later moved up to Pemberton, and lived in the street facing Triangle Valve a continuation of Smethurst lane.

In the late fifties, late afternoon. I was on the Scholes beat, a little further up Scholes, from the Blue Bell. A car came from the direction of Darlington Street, went through the taffic light, showing red, and smashed into a lorry travelling through the junction, towards Millgate. The lorry crashed into the traffic light standard, opposite the Bluebell. The standard fell, and just missed a women pedestrian. The women did suffer badly from shock. Thankfully there was no other injuries to anyone else.

I have a similar distant memory Albert, of a coach I think crashing into a newsagents just a bit further down than the Bluebell Inn. I think there was a fatality but not sure, it was the early 1950's. I suppose it was the days when brakes were not as efficient as today.

The coach was on its way to Wembley down Scholes for the Wigan v Barrow final. It was hit by a bus which took it into the shop on the opposite corner to the Bluebell. A lady on the coach did die and there where quite a few serious injuries.
