They are the Plantation Gates in the district of Marylebone, Wigan.
if you google marylebone ,plantation gates is just about the tmiddle
look what it says on the postcard it says mariebonne
It seems like we,re all correct on this occasion, i,ve just been past the said place. Just before you get to the Hospital coming from Standish and on the left there are both Marylebone Court and Marylebone Place, on the right hand side of M Court on the end house which fronts on to Wigan Lane is the sign 'Mariebone', i have been passing that spot for 70 years and have not seen that sign before today. I can only imagine that the word Marylebone is an Anglicised version of what appears to be French.
Surely one of the most photographed views in Wigan!
When I lived there as a little girl it was all called Marylebone. They then pulled down the old school and built a block of flats. This caused some confusion with the post so Marylebone became Marylebone place and the flats became Marylebone Court. By the way the sign you have just noticed is because it's only just appeared. Old postcards said Mariebonne though and not Mariebone! I was up there the other week and was told about the appearance of the new sign.
