What a brilliant photo. How many clogs have passed through this shop, many thousands I would imagine. Just before Walter died I bought a small pair of clogs from him which now sit on the side of my fireplace, a great reminder of this wonderful shop. Thanks for posting Dennis.
I had clogs made for my son in the late 70s when he was a toddler; I had clogs myself as a very young child in the 50s and I think there is nothing better for children's feet. What a shame they are no longer fashionable. My daughter had some clogs made by Walter when she was in her teens.....she loved them. When she got married and moved away she left them with me as they look so "right" at the side of my fireplace. They've even been on stage at Wigan Little Theatre in "Hobson's Choice". That shop was like going back in time, as is Rickard's in Hallgate, where Walter spent some time clog-making before he died; a good old-fashioned shop with good old-fashioned service.
A hundred years of clogging, my word. Ought to have a song writtrn about that
Another bit of history gone,I've spent some time in there as a lad, having new irons fitted to mi clogs,if you go on Album > Places > Hindley and go to page three, there are photo's of the inside of Walters shop,a good photo of the shop by the way Dennis.
my sister who lives in america came to visit for a few weeks she ordered a pair of childrens clogs,he let her pick the colour of leather and she picked a a very dark green, when we went to pick them up and he brought them out they were bright green like really bright green,my sister wasnt very pleased as she was going home the day after he didnt seem to understand why she was disgruntled he said green is green int it ? needless to say she never got her bottle green clogs,i saw them for sale in the window iv'e never seen sutch a horrid colour bet theyed be there yet if it were open.
In the back Walter had cuttings of Hindley St Peters cricket team on the wall as well as paper cutings all about Fred.he made me two pair of red clogs for my lads we still have them today and they were made in 1966 and i had them in red after the shirts England wore in the world cup final
There used to be a clog shop in Scholes, opposite Schofield Lane. I had a red pair of clogs from there in my childhood and loved them.
I also remember a tiny shoe repair shop in Linney St. The floor of the shop was covered with bits of leather which had been cut off during shoe repairs. The smell of leather always takes me back there.
Barbara, can you remember what the name of the shop was? My grandad had a cloggers on Scholes his name was James Ashton and was what they called those days 'a cripple'. Do you have any memories of him? Also his sisters had an haberdashery at the top of Platt Lane I think, their names where Sarah and Ellen Ashton. Anyone know anything about these relatives or their shops? Thanks.
I remember when I was about seven, I had pair of clogs, iron fitted on the bottom of them, I went to school in them, oh dear! I was accused of causing scratching to a floor in the classroom at Castle Hill School in Hindley, I've no doubt Walter would've made those clogs.
Harry Hightons. Just off Belvoir St,Anderton St maybe??
Jean J. I'm sorry but I have only vague recollections of the clog shop and the draper's shop at the end of Platt Lane. I will ask my older relatives if they have any memories of them.
If you type Scholes Clog shop in the search box at the top of the page you will find a picture of a Scholes Clog shop
There were quite a few cloggers in Scholes ,the most famous was Polly Lowerys( Polly Do'outs ) in Cambridge St.,The old folks used to say " Polly could put a clog iron on a bladder without bursting it". I had a pair of clogs made by her when I was a child , but my Mother would'nt allow to have irons I had to settle for rubbers, a great disappointment not being able to spark.Walter Hurst was a very good quizer ,I'am sure he was on television a few times
knew walter from standish quiz league top man
In the late 70's my Dad had Walter make me a pair of red clogs with (like dolly shoes) with brass buckles, I adored them. Dad also wore Walter's clogs for work and had his dress clogs too, beautiful craftsmanship.
