I was a sixteen year old junior photographer at McConnell News Service, latterly Wigan News service, and had been sent out around town with a 5 x 4" press camera and glass plates to try to find some "silly season" cute pictures to submit to the evenings.
While walking through Mesnes Park, I spotted a little family group enjoying a game of cricket, so with a little bit of thoughtful choreography I manipulated the group into a two column set up, one of the parents was instructed how and when to bowl, and I raise the big old MPP Micropress to my shoulder and counted down. I was elated after processing the plate, to see that I had captured the ball just milliseconds after the moment of impact.
Unlike modern day machine gun photographers, with glass plates, you set the shot up and took it.... just the one, plates were pretty expensive and excuses weren't expected of press photographers, so one shot it was and this was it.
An excellent series of photos David and some fascinating tales.
You wouldn't have attended the Thomas Linacre School by any chance?
Yes, Jake I did attend Linacre and in 1959, my final year had a one student exhibit in the school open day, moreover I got ticked off by the, then, Chief Constable for my sepia toned picture of a ten bob note. I think I ws the only member of the school photographic society and had the darkroom keys permanently with me
I attended the Grammar School at the same time, were you a "useful" athlete? If so I think I might recall you.
No Jake I was a sickly teenager, having gone to Linacre straight after spending seven months in Wrightington Hospital. I only gained any strength after joining the Judo Club in my later teens.
I did spend a lot of time in my thirties at the health club on Library St. and playing Squash at JJB's
Well done you. I have obviously confused you with a namesake, but keep posting your excellent stuff.
Jake, you probably mean Trevor Simms he was a top athlete at TLS when i was there, he appeared in the English Schools Sports, probably on more than one occasion.
