PUBS

I have never seen a photo of the pub head-on like this; you usually see it at an angle taken from down Wallgate. This is really nice.
It use to be a lovely nice pub but not anymore, I went in there the other week and to my horror found it to be quite full of drunks watching horse racing. I could feel tension in the air. Not my sort of pub.
My great grandparents lived in Bretherton Row, from where this photo was taken. They lived there in the 1890's, my gt grandmother bore 15 children but only 6 lived beyond the age of two, hard times.
Couldn't agree with you more Garry. I hadn't been in to any town centre pub for some yearsb but I ran into an old acquaintance in town a few months ago and we decided to go for a pint. We went into what was the Bees Knees and did an immediate about turn and came straight out. Full of drunks of both sexes and the atmosphere felt very hostile.
Happy memories of this pub. Nipping in for a bottle of Merrydown Cider, only gave you a half pint glass to drink it with.
well i dont thnk us latics lads will never get a pub like the bees knees 2 drink our merry down cider at the very back and then go of 2 the movies ha ha
Remember when it first oened as a wine bar, merrydown cider , a coule of tequila sunrises then off to rock night at Tiffnys/Maximes or to the Wigan Casino.
