I would say very early sixties going off the clothes and handbags.

In the sixties I thought we all looked young and modern... looking back, especially in the 40s and 50s, we look like we lived in the dark ages lol.... Having said that, we all looked decent, not walking around in Pjs, pants hanging off bums, we wore clothes that fit, hair that was combed and proper shoes..People had pride back then, something that is lacking in so many these days..

I can't remember exactly when Whelan's opened but it wasn't before 1968.

Remeber it well we used to park the car on the market hall car park facing the store while we did our weekly shop. In the mid 70s we bought a convector heater from Whelan's and we still use it! Upstairs was the "Room At The Top" in the early 60s but not sure how long it lasted. Anyone any photos???

I would say 1968 I remember the fashions very well. People still dressed up to go shopping! I remember going in the store when first married in 1969.
