On a Murky sunday afternoon in November 1988 Class 47 No 47125 climbs out of wigan on the Manchester line with a diverted Euston - Preston train with Westwood Power station in the background.

Murky it may be, but it makes me think of a day back in the late fifties when it was foggy,the bus into Wigan was delayed and I only avoided missing my train back to Leeds because an old school friend gave me a lift on his Vespa. It was only when I visited the loo on the train, almost at Manchester that I discovered I had a severe case of "black face" on one side!---The train was also delayed and this student nurse got a nasty "telling off"from the Matron for being "irresponsibly late" in reporting to duty!---HAPPY DAYS???!!
