Do you remember the church that was destroyed to build Tesco?

Comment by: D. on 30th December 2011 at 20:56

Am I right in thinking there was also a church on the opposite side of the road, the TSB moved to the site in the late 60s?

Comment by: irene roberts on 30th December 2011 at 20:59

No, sadly I don't, but I rememeber that Tesco Store. It was in the days of Green Shield Stamps!

Comment by: dc on 30th December 2011 at 23:05

Correct D it was King Street Baptist Church facing the Crawford rooms dance hall

Comment by: Mick on 30th December 2011 at 23:18

Comment by: Betty on 31st December 2011 at 00:00

Lennons was further down king st.It was next to Brocol house.I worked at lennons in the early 70s.It is now a car park.

Comment by: David Thompson on 31st December 2011 at 00:10

Lennons was opposite the old town hall and later became Kwiksave before this it was probably wigan Hippodrome

Comment by: barry prior on 31st December 2011 at 00:44

Lennons was down near the dole office.

Comment by: Art on 31st December 2011 at 01:14

The TSB ended up as the Poll Tax ofice, now a bar.
Lennons was where Brocol House is now

Comment by: Dennis on 31st December 2011 at 05:58

Mick... I think Lennons was over the road, where the old Hippodrome used to be. In fact, some of the store rooms where the original theater building.

My mother used to work at that Tesco, it was there she met and became friends with 'Big Amy'... Amy used to deal with shop-lifters.

Comment by: Mick on 31st December 2011 at 05:59

Mick - Lennons was on the opposite side of King St, next to Brocol House, and facing Rodney St.

Comment by: Fred Cunliffe on 31st December 2011 at 06:58

Mick,I think Lennons was on the other side of the road, further down .I remember the Court dancehall, used to go there on Sunday afternoons to the coffee club and dance to Hermans Hermits,Reverend Black and the rocking vicars etc.

Don't talk to me about Tesco...the town where I live has been fighting to keep Tesco out for more than 10yrs....they just don't give up & have now won the war on a single council vote...this is only a small town & Tesco will have an detrimental effect on the existing shops. They have already knocked down & relaced elsewhere the fire ststion, the community centre is the next on their hit list. They are a greedy company that will have their name emblazoned anywhere, at any cost, they don't really care about anything else...cheap food? There is no such thing as cheap food, you pay for it one way ..or another. There, thats me had my say !!

Comment by: Gerry on 31st December 2011 at 10:22

Lennons stood where the Hippodrome used to be I remember shopping in this Tesco it had a "moving staircase" on the left as you went in

Comment by: Margaret Wall on 31st December 2011 at 10:28

Mick, I think Lennon's supermarket was on the other side of the road near to the old TSB Bank where I worked for many years. They sold lovely hot pots with a crust which I regularly had for my lunch.

Comment by: dave johnson on 31st December 2011 at 10:29

Lennon's was on the opposite side further down. Where the car park is next door to Brocul House

Comment by: jimmyn on 31st December 2011 at 10:36

Not King Streets greatest era

Comment by: fred foster on 31st December 2011 at 10:44

Lennons was on the opposite side where the old Hippodrome was. The church on the Tesco site was a methodist and it had a school room behind. When I was at the Tech we sat exams in it

Comment by: henry7 on 31st December 2011 at 11:23

Green Shield Stamps spring to mind.

Comment by: Maureen Andrews nee McGovern on 31st December 2011 at 12:16

Mick...I am almost sure Lennons was on the site of the Hippodrome before becoming Kwik Save.

Comment by: Eric J on 31st December 2011 at 12:24

There was a methodist church opposite later became bank, Tesco was Lennons previously, Later Lennon started Pier night club,

Comment by: D. on 31st December 2011 at 13:35

Lennon's was on the site of the old Hippodrome, part of the Hippodrome building was incorporated into it, Kwik Save had the shop in the late 80s and it was pulled down about 10 years ago and is now a car park.

Thank you Helen. Couldnt agree more!!!! What about the Wigan fans who requested their ashes be scattered at the ground? Tescos put the statue of a rugby ball there. They will agree to anything to get yet another piece of Wigan land. They're everywhere!! Its obscene!!! What next? School fields? Hospital car parks? There'll be a Tesco replacing the WI shop in hospitals next, you just wait and see if I'm right. You cant move for'em! Overpriced, overadvertised, understaffed by people who think nothing of discussing between themselves what they did last night, whilst you're stood there like a lemon. I havent shopped there now for nearly two years and neither will I. Enoughs enough. No more Tescos. We're ovrerrun!!

Comment by: Bernard mullaney on 20th August 2012 at 12:43

What year did tesco go in king street

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 1st March 2024 at 11:08

Not sure when this picture was taken but those two building with the Court Cinema Booking Office and the Court Hall are in a much better condition today, regardless of their somewhat dubious purpose!

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 1st March 2024 at 12:40

I put this comment up following Veronica's other picture. I have sent a present day picture to Ron hoping he will put this up as a comparison the these two pictures. There is quite a contrast.
The Tesco Cube is thankfully long gone.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 2nd March 2024 at 10:22

I have sent a Present Day picture of the same scene to Brian, hopefully this will pop up on PAD at some time.
