I can almost hear mi Mam now:
"Have you been making fires, lad?"
"No, Mam." "Honest." "I've not Mam." "Don't belt mi, Mam." "Aww, Mam."
My uncle Jimmy spent most of his working life in that box, and I spent a lot of time with him in there, I used to call in if I was going to the pictures in Hindley, so that box ahs a lot of memories for me
I'd have been one of them urchins!!
i hope one of those kids is me i spent loads of time waiting for the steam!!!!!
aitch, I picked that up from previous comments on Hindley steam pics and I thought that you might like to see it.
Brilliant DK, these pics bring back so many great memories for me, I spent many hours on the Iron foot bridge watching steam trains go by. In it's hayday, the lines were extremely busy and fast with the Pemberton express none stop at through Hindley, and the link from De-Trafford junction with coal trains to Bolton.
Top pic..centre of signal gantry, could be St Marys Church at Lower Ince demolished some years ago, then you could see for miles around, today its an overgrown filthy mess, sadly.
This signal gantry was controlled by Hindley No2 80 lever signal box built in 1887, this was to meet the volume of traffic from the Whelley line, Pemberton line, Southport line and sidings to both up and down directions. The Pemberton was the Liverpool to Manchester fast lines that avoided Wigan Wallgate station, the line closed in 1969. Hindley No2 signal box closed in 1972 and was demolished. Today all that remains is the Manchester to Southport line.
