This was taken on our return journey from Burscough. Friends came along for the ride - and to help work the locks. At that time the ground paddles (the holes in the lock chamber walls which helped fill/ empty the chamber) were operated by these cumbersome 'jack cloughs'.

Gathurst lock? Surely you mean Dean Lock?
I remember these 'jack cloughs' now, upon seeing this picture.
Now we have a more up-to-date 'winding' system in replacment.
Totally forgot about these but remember playing about with them when I was a kid!
They must have replaced them late eightes..
