Just wondered if anybody recognised any of the people on this old photograph from a 1950s 'May Queen' parade in Hindley.

Younger generation haven't got a clue what May Queen is, every weekend in May we'd walk the streets....really good fun. How times have changed sadly.

Nay then John, how far do you go back with the younger generation, the May Queen was certainly happening when I was at Primary School, I still speak to the Queens of 85-87'... They got their own children now. That's 30 odd years after this foto bear in mind. I do agree todays kids don't follow tradition, with the May Queen and Walking Days, but you do have to look long and hard at how they are taught at school these days and most probably Health and Safety gone mad.

Besides these organised May Queens, we used to do our own, dressed up in crepe- paper outfits, with our Queen wearing her Mam's net curtain and a cardboard crown. We used to walk round the streets with a collecting tin, saying "Please help the May Queen", and then we had a picnic on the back-field with jam butties and pop. Happy Days!

This is not a May Queen, it is the Coronation Parade. The girl who was crowned Queen is Eileen Sudell.

Barbara Major is standing behind Eileen Sudell -I recognise lots of the girls, but cannot remember their names. Can anyone name the lady in the centre?

I can confirm it's St. Peter's - recognise all the faces but will have to scratch a bit deeper for the names to come out. Found myself, top right hand Welsh costume! I seem to remember we would have a parade each year, then go to the Vicarage on Wigan Road for a party.
