Not sure which way the train's heading, but will almost certainly have used or will use the Whelley Loop.

I'm a long in the tooth Standisher and I agree with Kevin, i'm certain Standish only had one set of steps going down on to Rectory Lane, from the left platform you went around the back of the waiting room and down a path to the lane.Also at one time there was a crossover [points] from line to line in the centre of the station which aren't on this photo.

Although a late comment it could be of some use. The train is travelling toward Preston, as the access from the subway for both platforms, was on the north side of the station. I worked on this station in 1960 during my apprenticeship, as I had to familiarise myself with all aspects of station and signalling work. Mr.Walker was the Station Master at this time; he lived in one of the railway houses at the rear of the station (left hand side of photo).
