I've always wondered that too! I know it closed in 1907 and in about 1896 the landlord was John Hart . . . would tell you more except my pub database is having an off day!
John Hart was landlord in 1885! - sorry :)
Was it just down from Old Lane and Larches Cottages on the Whitley side? There's an inn there in 1894 but not in 1909
Could well be Dave; my map of 1907 annoyingly stops at Larches Cottages!
Presume the building is gone as I don't recall anything of that style there . . .
Also just noticed that my map of 1907 (cover) says 1909 on the map itself!
Godfrey!!!
It is there Ian. If you go on the old-maps site and look at the 1:2500 map for 1894 you can just about make out the name. It stood wherethe second house south of Old Lane is now.

Perhaps to the immediate north of Old Lane...tiny bits of blue and white pottery have been found in the garden together with a couple of 'marbled' pieces of polished stone.
If you have a look at the photo next to this in the album, you'll see the Cherry Gardens and a very narrow Wigan Lane running past it in the direction of the RAE. If you look across the road on the side of what is now Mesnes Road, there appears to be a building with a light over the door that looks quite similar to the one on this pub. Could be wrong though !!
