This huge bonfire was built at Abbey Lakes in 1937 to celebrate King George VI coronation. You can just see UpHolland Chuch in the background. My dad ( Horace Webster) is just a young lad of 8 stood at the front wearing a flat cap.

Dad said he remembers it burnt for ages and that there were oil drums inside it. I agree about the health and safety, if that were today there would have been scaffolding around it, the men would be wearing hard hats and high vis jackets!

I just about remember going to this occasion. I was 6 at the time and was taken there by my uncle Charlie Barton. I seem to recollect some people in fancy dress, one that sticks in my mind was dressed as a chinaman with a pigtail. I think that they had a "doodah" band.by the way Barbara, my grandmother's maiden name was Webster and they came from Tower Hill.

Fred, my grandma (dads mum) was first married to a Simpkin, he died then she married a Webster.. curious to know if it's the same family..
