What a cracking photos I wonder if the men where real boatmen are models.
This pub is now called The Blue Elephant and is a curry house. It is a nice stretch of the canal I have to say.
They won't be working boatmen, as the last coal traffic ceased in August 1972, and that was Bickershaw to Westwood - they may indeed be the students mentioned in the thread on the converted lifeboat at Wigan Pier.
On second looks one of them looks like a Shevier so maybe they photographer as just got them to come out of the pub to pose.

Yep, you is right... but the writing is in BLUE! That is my excuse and I am sticking to it. ;-)
It is nice to note that they have left the old pub sign up on the towpath I always liked that sign, it just seems to fit the area.
they aren't real boatmen,they used to drink in the Navi - haven't seen this picture in years but I knew the guy on the left, I think they had an original picture in the games room in the pub when Bill ran it.
