Why was the name of this pub changed(date?) to The Lychgate? The Lychgate entrance to St Wilfrid's Chuch is down Rectory Lane!! If the new name had to reflect the position of the premises, then The Peacegate would be more appropriate!

My first local, Jimmy and Maureen had it back then. It was redeveloped and after a 'name the pub' competition, became the Lychgate Tavern. Wendy George had it later on. Had some good times in that pub.

I used to go in the Black Horse late 1960's early 70's, they had a concert room at the back with a stage and a drum kit.
Taylors had it at that time, I was friendly with their son Aubrey Taylor, there was a old brick two story barn building at the very back up against the wall of the cemetery, a large group of us used to gather on the upper floor playing records, The Move, Cat Stevens etc. and one of my LP's Otis Blue by Otis Reading. Its still a classic.
I would also like to know why and when it changed its name? and although live quite close by, rarely go in.

I think the name change came about when the pub had a refurb. The back room as you mention became unsafe as the roof was in a dangerous state and it was decided it would be knocked down during the works. At this time, Jimmy the landlord organised a re name competition, and the Lychgate Tavern won. I submitted the Standish Arms, which ironically the White Duck later became. The back room was brilliant. By the time we were going in the drum kit had gone, replaced by a dart board. There were pool tables, a pinball machine and later, a space invaders games table, perfect for our lot. Had some good nights in there, many happy memories.

Oops, duplicate !! I think the name change came about early, mid 80's, 1984 at a guess Colin. One funny that comes to mind, one night in the back room, I playing pool with 2 mates. we were only 17 at the time and hadn't been going in long. I was at the table lining up a shot, my 2 mates were chatting away behind me. suddenly the chatter stopped and I was aware of a figure at the door leading to the bar. I looked up and standing at the door was my Dad. I froze. He just said what are you having ? Pint of bitter please came 3 replies, and off he went to the bar. Urgent conversation followed, what do we do next ?. He came back with the drinks and went off to the bar to join his mate. The pool game was finished and we decided to face the music and join him at the bar. We all had a catch up and he finished his drink and they went for a walk to the Legion. When He came home later he just asked how long had we been going in and advised not to get in any trouble. I think he'd had a tip off we'd been seen in the pub and decided to come and check us out. Scary times :)
