I worked at Coops from 1956 to 1960, Mr Jackson was the Manager and he was a stickler for punctuallity and ruled with an iron fist. I worked on collar shaping and the girls on there were the best I have known. The Nurse there. sister Mc Dermott, she lived in Whelley. I used to cycle too and from work from Billinge and leave my bike in the area beneath the factory. The staff canteen was segrigated and Management had their own area. We used to go to the UCP for 3d of chips, free gravy and a glass of water for lunch, ah, those were the days
My first job was at Platts Printers which was next door to Coops and my wage was £3 3s 0d (three guineas) a week. I later went to work at the Police Station in Crawford Street. That was the county constabulary and the borough was down King Street.
