Good pic' Ron keep em coming.
Which way round is this pic' I'm confused ?
The photo is taken from the Douglas looking up towards Warrington Lane. You can just make out the Bluebell pub at the cross roads. Now the Salvation Army building is on that spot.
Thanks Ron - great picture by the way.
Immediately to the right but just off the picture was Amy Lane. A very steep cobbled hill but it was great to come down on a sled during the snowy winter months. On the left of the picture going up was the Shovel and Broom pub and Gubbins sweet shop. There was also a newsagent on the corner but the name escapes me.
Anyone recall the name of the row of houses behind the park area.
Around 1964 i briefly went out with a girl with red hair who used to work in British Home Stores and i think lived about the middle of that row?
Anyone remember her by chance?
Kevin, the newsagents on the corner, the name unfortunately also escapes me but I do remember it for the coach accident, sometime in the 1950's, when a coach virtually demolished the front of the shop, don't know if there were any fatalities but it was a serious accident.
Ashley. According to my late fathers records. The accident at Scholes crossing was on the 4/5/51.It involved a Bus and a Coach.
This must have been a somewhat accident prone shop. There was a similar incident in the mid sixties when someone decided to take a bus home from the Leigh area. I can't remember if it was a Leigh Corporation or an L.U.T. bus, however it ended up through the shop at about three in the morning. The noise certainly woke me. This may have been the final demise for the newsagency!
The coach in the accident referred to, had been organised by a group from Bottling Wood to go to a Wembley final. There were quite a few injuries and one fatality.
ive just noticed the tram lines going up scholes
