The street at the top, on the right hand side is not Birkett Terrace but Frederick Street and is still there but the houses on the right side of Birkett Street have long gone. However, those on the right still stand and in fact a long lasting gap in the housing on that side of the street, in the last few years, has been filled with new property. Sadly the cobblestones have also disappeared along with our beloved dog, glad to report though that Bernard is still fit and well.
The gap at the top on the right of Birkett St was called the 'sandy hole' by us kids and we used to run up and down the hill. I lived in the little drapers shop next door but one to the Crispen Arms from 1941 to 1953 and must have played with your sister Anne
Just seen your comment Diane, great to hear from you after all those years. I have another photo of the pub taken from "Berry's Yard" which I'll put on the site, however, if you left in 1953 then I don't suppose you'll be one of the children shown on the photo. My sister Anne is now a widow who lives in Horwich, her daughter lives in Wigan. Both my parents have passed on but my father only last year aged 93. Best wishes, Keith.
The Street at the top is Frederick St,my Grandad Atherton and Uncle Peter lived there at no 4 (i think it was) and my Uncle Bernard & Auntie Kathleen lived further along at no 14,I think my Grandad and uncle Bernard used to frequent the Crispin Arms pub which was just down the street.
