The last day of trading. Mum and Dad got most our furniture there. it was great walking into the shop, but coming out you needed ropes and pulleys...... it was all uphill. the assistants all wore brown Coveralls. My Irish mate William Alder worked there for a short while in the 60s he lived in lower Ince then Pennington Lane in Ince then joined the army.

I got my daughter Zeta's first bed from Penningtons when she was 12 months old in 1972. I think it cost me £12.00. And I got a divan and headboard for that. those were the days.

Of these two buildings much has been communicated upon over the years. The building to the left at the top of Stairgate now demolish.
Of the remaining building perhaps Georgian the now exposed gable end has some interesting features of bricked up doors and windows from when it was a gentleman’s residence.
I have sent a photo to Brian for pad, maybe it will appear one day.

That beautiful Georgian House is in a dire state now. Who ever bought it to convert but left it to rot is a disgrace. I wish I had the money to buy and restore it.

Meg, I understand that a major entertainment and events company has secured the lease to the former Debenham’s Store, it is the completely remodelled inside with a stage and food outlets. The main entrance will be alongside the Georgian House in Millgate so should present an opportunity for some enterprising entrepreneur.

Thank you for that information Colin. I do hope so. I've been checking on the British Listed Buildings website 48, Millgate.
It's late 17th century with mix 18th century refronting and remodelling. The entry gives a full description of both the interior and exterior. Well worth a read.
It makes me so angry that people are allowed to buy such lovely buildings like this only to abandon them. (Apologies. I'm on my soap box again!!)
