Another old photo (which I’ve colourised) taken again, I presume, by Mr John Cooper which has the title Wells’ House, Millgate. The original posting was by Ron and the comments made, indicated that it was a family by the name of Welles that occupied this house. Despite many actual wells being discovered in Millgate the “correct” title perhaps should be “Welles’ House, Millgate” - just a guess. I cannot place where it might have been in Millgate. perhaps a little further up from the Public Baths, another guess.

It looks old enough to have been in situ when Bonnie Prince Charlie graced Wigan with his presence. It’s seen better days I wonder when it was actually built. It looks like there’s a piece of wood holding part of the roof up. A great photo to see,. It must have been on the left side going up Millgate.

Great photo Keith. You've really brought that lovely old building to life. Can anyone else see the faces of a boy and a dog in the lower left hand window or are my eyes playing tricks. I've just compared it to the black and white photo and I can see them there as well but not so clearly.

Meg,I can see it but I guess we’ll never know who they were.

A packet house was where the packet boat stopped and went from. The packet boat took mail and parcels, and sometimes passengers.
