Following on from my posting of a map of Scholes, here are a few of the Crispin Arms regulars, taken after closing on Sunday afternoon. The pub, if my memory serves me right, would re-open at 7pm later that night. The group are standing on the wooden cover to the pub’s cellar, At back from the left, Bill Simm (he was one of the many thousands who scaled the walls of Wembley Stadium, at the very first Cup Final in 1923), John Foster and Arthur Burgess, at front, ? Davies and Arthur Burgess’s brother.

I forgot to add that Bill, to the best of my knowledge, did have a ticket but due to the chaos many had to resort to climbing in. This photo was taken around 1952.

Grey seemed to be a popular colour eh.

I watched Peaky Blinders briefly until I couldn’t watch it any longer. It contained far too much violence in it for me. Those men look the picture of peace loving folk. The man at the front looks old enough to have fought in WW1 but from the way he crouches down on his haunches as miners did in small spaces - he may have remained a miner during that war. We may never know.
