When I look at this photo I picture the folk who lived in those houses and all the memories flood back to me. And no Maureen the car was a visitor’s to Miss Doherty a teacher at St Mary’s. Her father used to play the fiddle on Whit Monday it was always ‘ The ‘Wearing of the Green’. There wasn’t many cars then in the streets.
It must have been after the Whit Walks when the photo was taken. The next block faced Gilroy St - still there which leads onto Scholefield Lane Edna. I did try chopping myself off but it didn’t work!
The Stocking Factory became the Paradise Club for a short time. I wish it was a clearer picture as it does look dreary- which it wasn’t really. Thanks for the interest though and thanks for your nice compliments for the sixties girl. It’s another time and another place.xx

I-was a bit of a ‘hippy’ in more ways than one Garry. I think it’s the way I’m stood! Well that’s my excuse..but thank you! You are a gentleman. Plus you are right we dressed a lot nicer in those days. ;o))

Lovely picture Veronica, I am sure our paths must have crossed in those days. You look so pretty and confident you would probably have given me the brush off! Although perhaps not, young men like me were always turned out smartly dressed in those days and knew how to be polite a courteous to a young lady.

Yes young lads and men were very well dressed in the sixties. Always wore suits even during the week as well as weekends. I love seeing photos of the lads and girls in the sixties. We all stood out then. I wasn’t confident really, I think going to an all girl’s school made sure of that! Especially Catholic
school education. Plus having a strict dad. Always had to be home by a certain time.

Ps Colin I wouldn’t have gone out with any lad unless they wore a tie!

My Great Grandad raised his family here. 1901,1911 and 1921 Census records for No 3 and 16 . Had a large family of 14.

I.’m sure my grandparents would have known them James Rudd. I had 5 generations of my family around the corner in John St.

I think communities were a lot closer in those days compared to today.

They certainly were James. Can I just ask did your grandfather work at the Gasworks? Thats where my dad worked from leaving the Army in 1946. I’m sure I have heard the name Rudd.

They were a large family, my Great grandad James was a miner,died in 1951before I was born, his last address was Durham Rd, his many sons, lived in and around Scholes. His granddaughter Joan married Billy Boston.. My Grandad James brought his family up Bridge Street, Wallgate.

Yes they were big families in the past my grandfather was one of 10 and a miner. People would know one another better in those days James. If they were in St Pat’s Parish as well especially.

I agree John there’s some really lovely girls and they end up spoiling their looks with fillers and all sorts of stuff. Au Naturelle is best with the minimum of make up, the freshness is spoiled they don’t need all that weird stuff at all.
