Town House built for Alexander Ratcliffe Mayor of Wigan 1771 - 1776

Sad that it has stood empty for so long, initially there was, if I remember rightly, plans for it to become a restaurant, though it never came to fruition, thankfully it does look to be secure and being maintained.

Amazing it has lasted all this time & avoided the bulldozer. A grand old house. Do you have the original painting Veronica ?

I haven’t got the painting of the house Helen. I looked the house up on Google and saw the painting. I put the photo on so Colin could see the ‘effigy’ of the little girl who drowned in the Douglas. If you enlarge the picture you can see it. She was I think the daughter of the Mayor in 1771. The house must have been modernised.

What a lovely building. I remember when it was Pennington's Furniture Shop.

Thanks again Veronica, I found the picture and posted a comment, hope it finds its was to Recently Viewed!
My comment was that the painting although identical has three story's, this one only two and I wondered if the top floor had been removed at some time?
I think the main Pennington's Shop was next door, you could access it at the rear from Stairgate.
As with many old buildings in Wigan, I too hope that someone with cash and vision can transform these into something other than a Betting Shop, Vape Shop, Turkish Barbers or Thai Massage Parlour as these seem to be the towns growing industries but I suppose anything is better than going to rack and ruin or demolition?

There are 13 of the longer corner stones to be seen in this photograph, whereas there are about 20 on the copy of the painting. The missing 7 would be about the height of a third storey. Note also that the rear section of the building has also gone.

All my mams bedroom furniture came from Penningtons and so did mine and my brothers when we were teenagers..I used to do all the polishing as a teenager and each piece looked beautiful.
