NICE PHOTOGRAPH. BUT NOWT TO DO WITH WIGAN..
l, like you, am an ‘old Wiganer’ (born 1941) and left in 1967. However, this site is called ‘Wigan World’ and I would contend that Leigh is NOW very much part of Wigan’s World, whether we like it or not.
Fantastic photo, and well worth putting on, even if it IS Leigh. It's not as if we are bombarded with photos of Leigh; it's a one-off and is a beauty!
I’m sure I have seen this photo on here before. I think its was in black and white though.
Yes, Veronica I posted it last July. A photo that is in the Wigan and Leigh Archives but in black and white. I often try colourising b/w photos but very few seem to be quite right, however, some manage to come good and I think this one did. Thanks for your comments.
Well done, Keith! The colour really brings the scene to life but is subtle enough to capture the time without making it look modern. Very cleverly done. Thankyou.
A wonderful photo and you've done a gradely job of colourising it Keith, especially in the detail, and I'm sure many Leighthers will be happy to see it. A lot of Wiganers would be familiar with this area of Leigh too, though with as it is now and when they're either going to Leigh Infirmary and Walk in Centre or to the market and shops seeing there's none in Wigan centre anymore, and as you say Leigh is now much a part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan as are the townships of Pemberton, Shevington or Standish.
Thank you Cyril, I’m very glad you like the photo. Sadly your comments on my ability are too flattering. All I do is use computer “magic” to colourise b/w photos and I have to confess it’s the computer that determines if a photo ‘works’ or not. All I can do is to tinker around with colour, sharpness, light and shade etc., in an attempt to improve it. However, your appreciation is very welcome since I aim to please.
The black boy, leaning against the window sill, seems to be of curiosity to the two boys staring at him.
I always say to people who say this or that place isn't part of this town. Well I always say which Council empties your refuse bins, and I can assure you that Leigh is under Wigan Council since 1974.
So old wiganer Leigh is very much part of Wigan.
