ANGIE, A GREAT PHOTO. IMAGES OF THAT PART OF TOWN i.e. THE POTTERIES. ARE VERY RARE.
Great pic Angie, i can see the mill door in middle of pic we used sit out there in summer having a brew, on the left i remember mitco peck tarpaulins in 70s and 80s and at back of houses on right was fourteen meadows.
Trencherfield Mill in the background. My grandmother worked there as a sweeper when she was 12.
Fantastic photo. What I would give to have a photo like this of the street I was brought up in. My mam worked at Trencherfield mill. Thanks for posting the photo.
This is a great photo Angie both of the mill and the street..I wonder why it had to go,the houses looked to be in good condition, from the outside anyway.
I believe Wigan was the first town in England to have play streets. Initiated by the Chief Constable of Wigan Borough Police.
Billy Boston lived on one of those streets before they got demolished, I can't remember which one, I only know as a friend at the time had a delivery round at the newsagents on Wallgate and delivered to his house.
The house front left looks to have had a problem with subsidence, the mill at the rear is Eckersley Mill which I'm sure other folks shall also point out.
Maureen, the nearest building doesn’t look solid, look at the middle windows.
This is a great photo to have. I like you Veronica, wish I had one that I was brought up in as well x
Yes I see what you mean now.
cyril ; correct eckersleys ,not trencherfield mill, billy boston lived at 35 swan meadow rd,,opposite eckersleys factory ,from mid/late 50s into the 1960s i lived at 31 until 1964
Thanks everyone. My Great Grandparents Thomas and Margaret Sharp lived in Letterewe Street for a long time and this photograph is from their collection. Grandma Margaret spent most of her life living in this street, at numbers 7 and 8 as a young girl, then at number 5 and number 3 after she got married. They brought their 3 sons up there one of whom was my grandad Frank.
Were there houses on the opposite side of this street or just the ones that are in the photo?
Grear picture by the way.
Facing Western Mill No 1 engine house, rare photograph. Notice the house on the right as per Cyril's comment about subsidence, look at those lintels!
This is now on the site of the Community Church next to Eckersley Mill and the former Wigan Corporation bus depot. I've heard of Letterewe, think it is a place somewhere in the Scottish mountains.
Thanks for the correct address of Billy Boston A.H., seems my old school friend was wrong about where he lived.
Dave Lewis mentions Peck's Tarpaulins, I know they did have a factory built here, but didn't they at one time have a factory/workshop behind the Tower Buildings and the Victoria Hotel on Wallgate.
You're right Mr X, it's up the top end of Scotland in the wild heather clad glens where the grouse and the haggis fly low.
cyril, billy signed for wigan 1954 he could have lived in letterewe st before moving to swan meadow rd. I think the house in swan meadow rd belonged to wigan rl club at the time. I don;t know what year letterewe st was demolished
Me and my family lived in Letterewe Street (1960’s), Number 7 I think. Holland’s, Bradshaw’s, Prescott’s, Stewart’s, Breheny’s
On the Census 1901 my Great, Great Grandparents Thomas And Jane Stazicker and their children lived at no 11 Letterewe Street. It's really nice for my mum Marlene (née Halsall) to be able to view the photo of where they lived. On the Census 1911 they moved to 26 Miry Lane, Wigan. Kind regards Carolyne
my Gt grandfather lived at No. 21 around 1895
