I remember this very well.We were on the corner of Queen St. I wonder if the Queen was aware it was Queen St!!
A great picture and sadly one we are unlikely to see again.
I wasn't old enough to remember the 1977 visit by the Queen, but I do remember her coming to Wigan again in 1986 to open the Orwell Pier complex and there were loads of people lining the streets of Wallgate like they are in this picture.
This is the Queen's Silver Jubilee of her Coronation. I'm old enough to remember her coming to Wigan 25 years previously. We came from School and we were lined up very near to where this photo is. All for a brief few seconds as she passed by in a huge black car. I remember it as if it was yesterday.
I remember this day, the whole of Gidlow Middle School were marched to Greenough St. to see the Queen speed past in a big black Rolls Royce (or Bentley) and we saw the Royal Train heading North as we walked back to School at Walkden Avenue. It was pulled by 2 x Class 25 Locomotives painted silver for the Jubilee.
I remember this day too. It was hot. I worked at the Halifax Building Society and we stood at the top of Crompton Street to watch her car go by.
