Where those cars are parked, would that be the entrance to the now multi storey car-park?
Alterations, is understated.
Andrew Lomax - where the cars are parked is now the corner entrance to the new market hall, at the junction of Mesnes St and New Market St.
Andrew, the car park is roughley were the Market Hall is now. Morrison's (previously Whelans) and a Dairy with milk floats used to be on the site directly before demolition.
The dairy mentioned was Grimshaws & Culshaws.
Its easy to forget just how grotty the town was even as recently as 30 years ago
Mike.W. It's not fair to say that Wigan was grotty, true, some parts of the town needed rejuvenation, but what have we got now? A town centre with a Market Hall that is half empty most of the time and loads of empty shops.
Yes , it was on the grotty side , but it had loads of character , the likes of which we wont see again .
Yes it does look grotty, part way through redevelopment and you can't say that it doesn't look better now. Along with the grot several fine old buildings were got rid of as well.
The cars aren't parked, they are too far away from the kerb, as you will notice Mesnes St was one way then. Someone name me a town that didn't and doesn't still yet have it's 'grot spots'. PS Yes it's me Derek, lol.
