My mistake was thinking it was in Birkett Bank when it appears it was at the bottom of Scholefield Lane. On the first photo it was the first building on the left.
It could be at the top end of Scholefield Lane where it meets Birkett Bank. At the Scholes end there was the building where Sherrington's had their hardware store then there was an entry, the a house I think and then a large gap before Gaskell St which used to have those large adverting hoardings. That's when we lived in Scholefield Lane from 1955 to 1964. Maybe that was where the bomb laned.
I know nothing about the Raven pub, but the picture does seem to show the end of Scholefield Lane where it joined onto Birkett Bank with the cobbles on the right of the picture being at the entrance to Birkett Bank Terrace. There is one feature of it which makes me feel slightly uneasy - Scholefield Lane looks narrower than I recall it being.
I think this is on the corner of Scholefield and Hardybutts.
From there the first pub along Hardybutts was the Black Bull, with Bull brow down the side going down to Darlington St East. Ron Hunts grandfather was the landlord there at one time, so I am told.
I agree with you AB - it is the corner of Hardybutts and Schofield Lane. And the Black Bull is still where you said it is. And on the right would be where Bell Green's shop was.
THE SHOP IN BIRKET BANK OPPOSITE THE PAPER SHOP WAS A GROCERYS NAMED " VALENTINE'S "
Although 11 years after I posted this I can now confirm that the author of “Zeppelins over Lancashire” has the location of the Raven pub incorrectly described. I have seen ordnance survey maps with it listed as being roughly half way down Birkett Bank, on the same side as the Crispin Arms.
Is this building on the corner of Darlington St and Birkett Bank? It’s been a shop in the past and is now a bicycle shop now. The entrance to it is on a corner…if indeed it is. Just wondering…
Oops! Just noticed the pub you mention Keith was on the same side of the Crispin. I don’t recall it at all.
