Ford Escort Mark 1? WHAT COLOUR WAS IT?
I remember Byrom St. very well. I went to Poolstock C of E School, which was just near St. James's Church, which is on the photo. I can't say I remember Bert Melling, but other names, Harry Morgan, and his younger brother Dennis, Eric and Jacky Highton, Terence Tuhey, James Atkins, Jacky Parkinson, Maurice Edwards, the list goes on------.
Tony, I think that's a Viva
Vauxhall Viva SL
Keith remember Bert very well worked with im for years at Reeds
bert,s wife doris was my brother and sister,s cousin.across the street was another family pendergas.Ithink, they were related to my brother and sister too.
My late father-in-law came from around those streets, his name was Stanley Beckett, he had brothers george, cyril and others that I don't remember.
My next door neighbour[who is 83] was brought up in this Street. Her maiden name was Mary Hughes and she is the cousin of Jackie Parkinson .
Bert & doris Melling were friends of my parents John & Eva Hagan.I also remember Stan Heyes, Cyril Pendergast and John & Anthony Unsworth.
Hi Tom Nice to hear from you,our Cyril lives in Warrington now and I live in Ashton.Look on school photos Poolstock C.E. school and you will see a few people you know.
Hi Joan (Beckett). Stanley lived in Brook Street and was my mother's cousin (Agnes Beckett). I still get a Christmas card from Stanley's wife Betty every year. I remember Stanley very well as he lived next door to my grandparents. My grandad and Stanley's dad were brothers. Small world isn't it?

I would love to know what the rest of the reg number is. I had a white Vauxhall Viva SL90 reg NDM 493E in the early 1970's, wonder if it was this one?
Graham, yes it was NDM 493E, there is another photo showing the full registration.
Linda.. do you have the other photo or can you tell me where I can see it? The car was white when I got it then I sprayed it blue and put an imitation leather roof on it. It's great to hear this was the car..thanks.
I lived in Byrom Street from 1968 to 1970 as a kid.I remember neighbours Mrs Mason, The Patton Family, The Aspey family, Jackie Parkinson (Who I knew for years after we all moved to new housing and used to bump into him when he eventually moved to Scholes decades later.....great character). Does anyone remember the Pendriss family, Dennett family or Gary Croft, who's dad have the local butchers shop? I also remember Mr Barton who had a local grocery shop and contined to deliver to us for many years after we left Poolstock with his big van. He was the old school with the brown coat and pencil to add everything up.
I have great memories of this time in my life....walking to St Joseph's school down the "Meadows" and occasionally calling into what was the De Roma's shop facing the Honeysuckle. Catterall's pen was just at the top of the street with the old dog track not too far away.....all great places to play. When I go back to the area nowadays it all seems so small and so much has changed. Byrom Street is long gone but part of Chadwick Street still stands. I also remember Jackie and Lottie Linney's shop and Jack Watson's bike shop on poolstock lane. To me this was the end of the true community spirit of this country, around 1970 when the started to pull the old houses down and move everyone to different areas...things never quite seemed the same. I wish there were more photos of the area pre 1970 on the net.
Lived across road from Mary Hughes in early 70's. There were Mardens, Mr & Mrs Brown, Mrs Rigby. Remember Grace's shop.
