does your wife know of Elizabeth fowles? she was of this family. she would have been born in the at the turn (or just before the 20th century.) she was in service to a doctors family in wigan lane. when she retired, she went to live with my grandmother in Frederick street Lower ince.We called her "granma Fowles".think she died in the 1970's.
Looks like some of the women watching have towels/cloths on their heads?
I would speculate that the picture was taken at the time of the Catholic Whit Monday walk.
From one end of Wigan to the other people would bring out chairs and benches from their homes and pubs to watch the parades go past, it was so large it took hours.
I lived in Harrogate Street at the time and Darlington Street would be packed with people regardless of faith as this was a major event. As a child I walked every year with St Johns School, Brick Kiln Lane.
