Bickershaw Colliery Baths, was the the title of this b/w photo, posted by Evelyn Armstrong, a dozen or more years ago. She mentions the photo was taken in 1952 and she listed the names as, L- R Don Armstrong, Tommy Rigby, Jimmy Kenny, Harold Marrow? I posted it since I thought the colourisation worked effectively and might it be possible that some of the young boys are still with us, I hope so.

Saw the pic. First thought was, "What extraordinary clean faces for miners"!
Tis not how I remember them.

The read the description: 'Bickershaw Colliery Baths'.

Those boys look far too young to be working down the mines. They look like school boys.

I am sure the lad on the left, Don, is my friend's late husband. Lovely photo, and they look such nice lads.

Yes you are right Irene, that is Don , I thought this was my photo because I have put it on in the past . They will all be15 ..just left school and signed on to work for NCB . He became an electrician and did 40 years only finished when the collieries closed.

Keith, I thought the photo would have been mine when Irene messaged me about it. Unfortunately I lost my soulmate 3 years ago yesterday age 84 after 60+ years marriage. Don’t know about any of the others .

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 20th January 2025 at 15:34

Yes, Don on he left was married to my friend Evelyn.....sadly he passed away three years ago.

Evelyn, may I first of all send you my deepest commiserations on the passing of your dear husband. My wife and I are approaching a similar length of marriage and I can only imagine the depth of your loss.
I would like to thank you for posting the photo which lent itself so well to the colourisation process, hope you don’t mind that I used it for that purpose.

Keith, thank you for your message of sympathy, yes it is 3 years and I don’t know you but it does help., I know he is in a better place than I am. I have tried to put another one on but it hasn’t appeared so I must have done something wrong ….I will try again. This one is a group of the boys and must be around the same time because he was still 15 yrs old. Don did tell me that they had a game of football in their dinner hour and the photo was taken. Take care. Evelyn

The lad on the right..Harold Marrow was my foreman at Heinz years ago.
He sadly died of a heart attack whilst on holiday abroad.
Think he was in his early 50s...top man.

Hurricane, I thought I had got Harold’s name wrong. Was his name Marrow or Marron ? I thought the latter. I knew he died quite young .

Comment by: Keith Beckett on 22nd January 2025 at 08:17

Evelyn.
The records show him to be Harold Marrow, born in 1937 and died in 1989.

Comment by: Caddy. on 22nd January 2025 at 10:55

I remember him from Heinz and I was working there in 1989.
I was surprised to read that he had died so long ago I thought it was later than that?

Sorry to hear about Don Evelyn, I knew him from the pit, a real nice man.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 23rd January 2025 at 10:11

Handsomeminer and Tuddy.....I have had a message from Evelyn this morning; she has tried to message you both on here to thank you for your kind words regarding Don, but each time she tries to "submit" the message, it goes off. She has tried numerous times but with no luck, so has asked me to thank you both on her behalf. She is very touched by your kind reminiscences of Don.
