The three Auxiliary Woodlands Hospitals were in The Woodlands (now demolished) opposite the hospital, The Mariebonne just off Wigan Lane, and The Beeches at Standish (now Alberts Restaurant).
David the ward was demolished to make way for the new builds, it was off the main corridor of the hospital and down some stairs. North Ward was above the Red Cross Ward so that gives some indication as to where it was situated, and was possibly around where the MRI, CT scanning radiographers are now in the new building.
I would have thought it to have been put in the chapel, but obviously you would have looked in there, have you enquired with the Wigan councillor George Davies, he was the Head Porter when all the re-building was done, and he may just have an idea as to where it could be when put in storage.
In this photo by Chris Heaven, where the crane and other works are would be the area where the Red Cross and North Wards would have been. https://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=5&id=32801&gallery=Royal+Albert+Edward+Infirmary&page=1
Thanks, Cyril - I don't recall seeing any signs for it when I first started visiting folk at the Hospital in 1997 had it gone by then?
Thanks for the top about George Davies - I expect he's too busy knocking on doors at present to give time for an enquiry.
The ward would have been long gone by then David and if George doesn't know with him having been retired for some years, I'm sure he may know someone who could be of help, the porters are often more in the know of what goes on than are the management.
