Unfortunately I have no record of what went wrong from Fathers' records.
Where is this location Barrie, it says Powell St on the other photo.Would that be the Powell St near what was then the rugby ground?
Edna, Yes Powell Street heading towards Standishgate. I think the building across the road may be part of St.Johns's R.C.Church.
I wonder what the couple walking past were thinking of the antics.
An amazing photo Barrie, I'd forgotten what the buildings along Powell Street at the side of the Convent and St John's church had looked like, the one leading to the church seems to be a gate house type of building, also showing are the other buildings further along towards Standishgate, they were there when I began working at the Co-op, and if I remember right by 1970 they had all been been demolished. The building at the extreme right of the photo will be the presbytery for St John, and the road on the left of the photo will be Water Street.
The coach is outside what would then have been the Drill Hall. I can recall as a young boy walking past the open street doors to Santus Bodyworks within feet of men using welding machinery. Elf n Safety would have had an hissy fit today.
This link to the Album where there are a few photos of the buildings on Powell Street and also a map that you put on Barrie. https://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/showalbum.php?opt=5&gallery=Powell+Street%2C+WIgan
Like Cyril, I too had forgotten what the I'd forgotten what the buildings along Powell Street at the side of the Convent and St John's church had looked like. Wonderful to have the old memory cells kicked into life again by a long forgotten image. Thanks for posting.
Yes it has ‘clicked’ with me now! It was the wall that confused me I had forgotten about it. Although I did think St John’s Presbytery plus Paget’s Decorators was at the very end on the right.
Veronica, it took me a while to figure it out too, but the Georgian house which was Pagett's decorators is just after the double bay windowed building near the gas lamp and has a low wall with iron railings, both are still there with the house now being Limesbridge House, 5 Powell Street, there's been a few businesses there over the years, and now looks to be a Businesses Office and Property Management Company.
It just speaks class to me Cyril that part at the bottom end. Still confounded with the wall ! It’s all ‘double’ crossings out of the picture and it’s more open land now after what was Pagett’s….it’s a mess what they did in getting rid of buildings imo.
