In 1926 my Father moved up to Wigan from Maidstone to start employment at Northern Counties in their body shop. However, after 6 weeks he "jacked it in" and moved over to Massey Bros. where he stayed until 1936. I have just come across this photo in the family album of his work mates working on a AEC single deck bus/coach for Maxways. On the back of the photo reads L to R W.Wilcox, Alf ?, Dusty Millar(Body Maker), George Dawson (Body Maker). According to Phil Thoms book-Massey Bros Coachbuilders, in 1932, Birkenhead company MacDonald & Co (Maxways) placed an order for 6 of these AEC Regal vehicles to be built & all delivered between March & June of that year. This one is the 4th one of the order.

Crosville took over Maxways in 1934 and the Regals entered their fleet. They were re-bodied by ECW in 1939 - more to do with giving them a new lease of life as wartime service buses (seating up from 32 to 39) than the quality of Massey Brothers' workmanship.....
It's great that images like this turn up - I have a couple of images of AEC deckers being built in Liverpool Corporation's bodyshop - fortunately someone spotted them when they were thrown out, and rescued them from the fire.

Thank you Rev David for your info above. Are there any images of the
Maxway/Crosville AECs after re-bodying by ECW ?. Also, any pictures
of AEC Deckers being built in Liverpool. I remember the Daimler buses
of Liverpool Corporation, bodied by Northern Counties of Wigan in the
late 1940s. Regards, Ray Smyth.
