Closeup view of the patent plate on the Point of Ayr winding engine. So far I have been unable to trace the actual date and patent number for the Mellings valve gear - if anyone does know them, I'd be very grateful to hear about them. The stamped letters in the brass are not the patent number, but possibly a works reference code?
