Most HGV's were British at that time, 1950s.
Most of these tippers are Leyland 600s, people keep on about diesel smoke emissions to cars, vans and HGVs. Today however they are so clean you'd think whats all the fuss about compared to diesels in years gone by.
Ie, struggle starting from cold, blue smoke, smelly and noisey. Today the diesels are brilliant and I'm sorry to see them phased out, they've been around since the 1890s and have been the backbone of the world in the modern day.
Is it true that Oliver had a speedway track on his land in Coppull and if so where about's was it ?
This chalice glove , slapped across my face , I would never ignore!
Are you men or sheep?
Got me with that one Julie ?
I honestly wouldn't know the answer to your question Standisher, although it sounds perfectly feasible that they may well have had their own track, as they appear to have owned a sizeable chunk of land. Many years ago, I used to frequently come into contact with an elderly chap, Jimmy Horsfield, who claimed that the Harts often employed him to clean their bikes. I had occasion to visit their premises a couple of times in the early 70's when they operated their brake drum skimming business. If you haven't already seen it, item #:29318 on the album, gives a fair amount of information about the Hart brothers. Also, as stated by AB, a third brother, Stan, also a speedway rider, died following an accident on a track in Birmingham when he was riding for Belle Vue Merseysiders. The date that I have is Aug 25th 1937.
Regards. Ozy.
Standisher. See the series of stills, on YouTube, within which there is a coloured photo of the former track. Type in 'Jack Winstanley speedway.'
