Prior to pouring the concrete, the shaft had been filled with many hundreds of tons of limestone. The concrete was transported in from the then Pioneer plant in Queen St. In Wigan. Sandra Cullen can be seen in the photo driving the Mercedes truck. She can still be seen driving her mixer in the Wigan area even today.

I remember all the lorries coming with all those stones.The shaft was filled very quickly.

Hi, I worked with my uncle transporting the limestone. The stone was large grade (more like rocks about 8-10 inches in size) and came from Back Lane Quarry in Carnforth and its was tens of thousands of tonnes rather than hundreds. It took maybe 3/4 weeks to fill the shafts. Strangely, Sutton Manor in St Helen's which wasnt as deep as Parsonage took about 6 weeks to fill, perhaps the shafts were wider?
