David. Were they drapers, and if so, did they have a shop, at one time, in Spring View.?
I love those clothes and hairstyles! If it WAS a draper's shop, Albert, I remember Alf Taylor's drapers in Lower Ince, on Warrington Road, somewhere opposite Manley Street, but I know there was a branch in Spring View as well, although I don't remember it myself.
Albert, I think they were wholesale grocers. I seem to recall they had a warehouse opposite the canal in the Poolstock area as you went from Chapel Lane towards St. James church.
No Albert, they were wholesalers (fruit and veg I think). They also had branches in Warrington and Bolton. They were in the building next to the tower on Market Street.
Albert - can you please email me on ftbmrcc2@gmail.com with regard to your search for your old RAF comrade.
Apologies for disrupting your post, David.
I knew Audrey Matthews, the family lived near Pottery street, and she had a sister Margaret.
They were wholesale grocers and the name came from W H Lever and H Taylor. W H Lever became Lord Leverhulme later on. Their slogan and trade name was Harvest Home and showed a man with the world on a shovel bringing the world harvest home. Later on they re-located later to Hart Common in westhoughton. Howard Barnard was a rep for them and when we had our shop we traded with them and Jack Holland from Scholes
Nellie Haslam still lives in Shevington
Albert, I think Alf Taylors, was at the end of Marlborough Ave.
I would like each one of you to know that Mick found my long lost friend whom I last saw in 1958, when he was serving in the Lancashire Constabulary, at Standish. I owe Mick, much gratitude.
Thanks to each of you, for all comments in respect of my mistaken notion.
The gentleman listed as ? Smith on the back row is Thomas Balfour Smith who used to live on Pyke Street, Whelley. He was married to Ellen and had two sons; Geoff and Gerald. Thomas died in 1972 at the age of 71. I am Geoff's son, therefore his grandson who was named after him. I am 63 and I live near Blackpool.
