Other department at the Observer (wrongfully) accused the machine room staff of being miserable over the festive period. Most depts were celebrating Christmas and the new year with cards, decorations etc etc, While the press room saw none of it. So that year in 1977, Derrick Smith suggested the printers make their own Christmas and new year card in the form of a photo, it read: Merry Christmas and a happy new year from the Machine room.
