Fantastic photo, would love to know when it was taken. I can't believe how happy these girls look given the job they were doing, the hours they worked and the wages they were paid.
Nice one! I can remember seeing on some TV Documentary about these lasses, a couple of senior gals who used to do the job both said they would go back to doing it in shot. My grandmother was one at both the Maypole and Moss Hall pits, and always looked back with happiness at her time as Pit Brow Lass.
Hi Mark Have you any idea what year this was taken my Mam was a pit brow lass and she lived in Bamfurlong her name was Gladys Weigh
Glenys
My mum tells me it was taken in the late 30s,the 1st woman next to my mum is my aunt Bessie, Wilf Metcalfes mum, she is from Bryn Gates, the woman center bottom is from Bryn Gates, Annie Potter,Nellie on the bottom far right is my mums cousin
If you go into Photos, Album, Work, scroll down to colliery & pit brow lasses, you will find a photo of Bamfurlong and Bryn Gates girls i know some of them but not them all,My dad worked at Mains and also lived near the Weighs in Bryn Gates
The back row right hand side is my aunt Gladys Chilton,(my mums sister) and mum thinks the one leaning forward next to Gladys is Edna Rose. They both lived in Stubshaw Cross.

The woman in the centre at the front was my mum. She loved her days working on the pit brow. Sadly she passed away in May 2007 at the age of 85, hard work never hurt anyone she used to say.
My mother was a Pit Brow lass. sHE STATES THAT IT WAS A fantastic job. She is still alive at the grand age of 98.She would walk miles there and back to her work. Unfortunatly I dont know which Pit she was employed.
