Hi Susan, are you absolutely sure this is Castle Hill School? It looks rather like the playground at Argyle Street Seniors, with the roof of The Church of Christ in the background, and the canopy in the Juniors playground to the left. I may well stand corrected. Regards, Keith
It is definitely Argyle St. Secondary School and the pupils on the photo started there in August 1956.
sorry i have got it wrong it is Argyle school not Castle Hill.
It deffinatley was 1956 I am on this with your dad it was taken just after we started there and the teacher was Mrs Valentine.
hi i started two years after that photo was taken i.was christine walker i reconise some faces .my mum worked in woolworth on the biscuit counter...
Top row five from left, to my right David Chambers, great to see so many faces i still recognise.
What a photograph late 1956 or early 1957. This indeed was a pioneering class at Argyle Street. Some of these pupils went on to sit their GCE Exams in the Summer of 1961. They were the first to do so from Argyle Street School. Well done to the Headmaster, Mr John Lowe, for his vision for the school and to Mrs Valentine for realising them to be GCE Standard. This was indeed groundbreaking as previously only Grammar School pupils sat these Exams. Anita Battersby then went on to study A Levels in the 6th Form at Hindley & Abram Grammar School.
Back Row: can't remeber his name (he lived in First Ave; Alan Porter; nk; Alan Hamer; Raymond Muskett; David Chambers; Tony Elwood; nk; Terry Alker?; Rodney Roberts; Michael Robinson?
Middle Row: Jeffrey Hodkinson; nk; Joan Rosbottom; Brenda Martindale; Brenda Forshaw?Patricia Hill;nk; nk; Barbara Green; John Collier; Mrs Valentine.
Seated: nk; nk; Janet Baron; Anita Battersby?; nk; May Shuttleworth?; Vivien or Gillian Glover; her twin Gillian or Vivien Glover;nk
Front Row (crossed-legs): regret to say I can't recall any of the 5 names.
First left on the seated row is Christine Quinn and next to her I think is Gladys Roughley. Next to me on my left is Mildred Stephenson. I think next to May Shuttleworth is Jean Harrison but not too sure about that. Still in touch with some of these even though we all live many miles from each other.
Middle row is Delia ? ...... Frances Mullen
Any chance, Wigan World, of putting this photo on Argyle Street council school site where it belongs ?
