one is chemistry when she was in Form LVI b & the other was English Language Comprehension in Class, Transitus (?) Anyone out there remember her or the classes, I remember one of her friends was an Yvonne ( Barker?) who lived down the lane opposite the Lyric Cinema in Upholland, Yvonne moved with her family to Devon in the 60's.
This brought back a lot of memories! As I remember, each subject had a different colour for the book cover, Then there was a'Scribbler'which was thicker and was used for notes, etc.in class.(along with many 'illicit'uses!! I
think the Yvonne you are talking about may be Yvonne Baxter, who certainley lived down Lafford Lane.I think she was in my A-level English Lit class.
I remember Anne Bradshaw, and Yvonne Baxter.
Others in my year were Malcolm Forrest, Maureen Williamson, Beryl Roscoe,Kathleen Boardman,Pat Lowe,David Roscoe, Arthur Penny,Frank Birchall,Jessie Woods,Eva Grimshaw, Elaine Wilson,Kathleen Peet, Ian Pickles, + + + more
Joan, I remember you!We were in the same year, weren't we.Or maybe one year apart? (My name then was Clarkson)
I do remember you Ellen
Hi I am currently working in a company called M&D Cleaning Supplies (which used to be the old Lyric Cinema in Upholland). We are 40yrs old this year and I would like to put pictures in reception of old to new, I am try to find any pictures of our building as it stood as the lyric cinema, can you help?
Went to UGS (ugly grub scratchers to the jealous) in 1949. It was on Sandbrook Road, and my children went there when it was Upholland High School. I started in 1R in the line of huts at the top end of the playing field. In the early days the teachers came round to your class, later on you went to the teachers room. All the teachers had nicknames ,Little John, Spike Jones, Charlie (Appleton), (Syd) Pennington, Minty and of course Alfie (Maggs). The male prefects had their own room and regarded themselves as little gods. I once got 'pumped' by a pre because I ignored him when he was screaming Pennington. No apology when he learned my name was Penny ,boys all called by their last names of course. Did one year at what is now Winstanley College. It was woodwork and us boys walked down to our old school and collected as much timber as we could carry ,and took it to the new school. I hated Latin (waste of time) and apart from Amo,Amas,Amat well thats it. It was a wonderful school though ,and though I didnt go to UNI my education served me well all my later life . Come on now Theres a breathless hush in the close tonight.
I remember Arthur Penny - and the classrooms in a line of huts - I loved Latin, but found translating from English into Latin difficuly. Mr. Studdart was an excellent teacher, and he once gave me a mark of 10 out of 100 for a mock exam, with the comment " Joan, I have given you 10/100 for getting your name and the date correct in English". I was very amused by it. An excellent school.
