Can't help with the location Ron but the men seem to be singing lustily !
I have racked my brains tryinig to think where this location is buy I have drawn a blank. At first I thought Frog Lane with the Pear Tree pub in the background but the gable end is the wrong shape plus the road seems to bend to the left before the pub.
I've been racking my brains ( which doesn't take long) I can only presume it's somewhere in the Frog Lane, Gidlow Lane, Park Road area?
Could possibly be School Lane ,the shop Jackson's
Plumbers ? In the background Bath Springs Public House . Not certain but it's the best I can come up with.
Ron & Rich, I too was thinking Frog Lane with the junction of Upper St. Stephen Street, there's now a row of three houses on this junction that are newer than the ones further along Frog Lane, though looking on google maps and the photo I've doubts that it is because the white gable in the distance is a lot taller than the one at Morris butchers.
They must be singing and the band playing a good rousing song as those watching are joining in even the local dogs. When the Salvation Army band went around the streets playing they always had a few dogs following them round, they must like the sound of or certain notes played by a band.
Its got to be somewhere near the Queens Hall area / district obviously. So it can't be far away.
I can't see them walking up to Scholes? But I could be wrong.
Its a puzzler
It's definitely taken on a Main Road. I'm thinking Frog Lane area? but its the building with the white Gable End that I can't place..
I was wondering why they aren’t singing on the Market Square being so near.
Veronica, if it was just The Queens Hall Walking Day it probably wasn't very big, unlike the Catholic Walking Days when a number of churches all walked together and gathered to sing on The Market Square. I used to walk with Rose Bridge Methodists in Ince and I recall us stopping to sing a hymn in Caroline Street, (the INCE Caroline Street, not the Wigan one), near to Rose Bridge School. I can remember people standing at the doors of their terraced homes and joining in with the singing.
Yes you’re right Irene.
Besides Whit Monday St. Pat’s used to walk around the church outside for the Crowning. That did stop the horse and carts though in Hardybutts when the road hadn’t been split up at that time. ;~)
On the white gable end of the building there appears to be a long sign near the top with letters on it advertising something. Maybe a pub building or a works unit?
The writing does look suspiciously like the Brickmakers Arms? But if it is, the side facade of the building has changed a lot since this photo was taken.
If has been suggested that it's taken from around Lower or Higher St Stephens street? Then the building with the white Gable end, would have been in the location of the GUARDIANS pub? But that building has been there for a long time and it doesn't look like that building???
Ron, the area looks familiar to me as my daughter lived in Frog Lane at one time and there is just something "familiar" about the scene, and I must admit that "The Guardians" pub crossed my mind.
If this photo was taken in Lower or Higher St Stephens street looking down in the direction of Frog lane you would not get a view of the Guardians pub. You would be looking at either Regentruck or the old corporation yard. Also if it was taken looking up Frog lane you would see the railway bridge near the Colliers pub not the white building in this photo.
Its a mystery! I still make the Brickmakers pub the favourite though!
I hope someone can clarify where this photo was taken.
Rich I wasn't saying the photograph was taken in one of the fore mentioned street i.e. Lower Higher St Stephens St. I was suggesting it could have been taken at the Frog lane end of the streets That's the only stretch off road that has a bend, like as shown. No way its the BRICKMAKERS if you are saying the white building is the Brick? Then this photo would have to have been taken near the traffic lights at Springfield Road. The road from the lights looking towards the Brick ifs a straight road this image shows the road has a distinctive bend.
I might be barking up the wrong neighborhood but it does seem to have the look of the top of Haigh, on the corner near the Balcarres Arms. The white building could be the old Red Lion pub. The 2 gentlemen on the right could be stood outside the Church, facing the Balcarres. What do you think ?
I'm still of the opinion there is a strong possibility this is School Lane . School Lane was a continuation of Crompton St after Scholes traffic lights In becomes Warrington Lane.
I’m wondering if they were singing ‘’ Land of Hope and Glory” …if they were here today they certainly wouldn’t be singing that one.
Tom do you mean Crompton St in the distance? I don’t recall a shop on the corner. What was the name of it? Plus if it was there where they are singing what route would they have taken.?
Could it be the junction of Woodhouse Lane and park road
Veronica, the shop was Jackson's Builders and Plumbers , the background possibly The Bath Springs Public House . If I'm correct they would have processed and turned right at Scholes crossing walking past The Shovel and Broom and Anderson's Sewing Factory. St George's used that route albeit they walked down Scholes from Greenhough St. probably turning into Station Rd, pass the children's library.
Hope you and your family are keeping well .
Best wishes,
Tom.
Thanks Tom I do remember the Bath Springs pub but not the builders and plumbers over the road - that side is very vague to me. Although I do remember houses on both sides.
I have also racked my brains and tried out a few locations I think Liam is right. It could be at the junction bottom of Springfield Road leading on to Frog Lane where today there is emply land/modern houses on the left. I've posted a photo showing the location.
The only thing that's been bugging me is the pub seems to be out of context as today it has an apex. I do wonder what stood to the left of the pub as the empty land was built on in the last few years. Could it have been attached and had the pubs name printed?
I think the photo was possibly taken from the other end of Woodhouse Lane, Andrew. Somewhere near Margaret Street? If so the view of the pub what we see in the photo would be the side view which is in Foster Street. That is the direction the lamp post is facing. Almost directly opposite Foster Street across the road is Ratcliffe Street.
I think its upper St Stephen st looking towards gidlow Lane. The build on the corner is now flats next to pillar box. It was a shop. The gable in the back ground is a big house on gidlow Lane facing car wash?
