Anyone recognise the location?
That is the crossroads at the Swinley Road and Swinley Lane Junction. Where the car is on the left is the start of Swinley Lane, Earl Street is on the right.
Rich I don't think it is????. I've just looked on Google Maps The end house on this image shows a garage at the side of the house but there isn't any space for a garage on Google maps. Also it appears there are two front doors adjacent to each other Only one door on the Google Maps image
Good point Ron. Ive just looked at it myself.
But it doesn't look like a full garage, more of a "lean to" with only a one sided slanting roof as opposed to two. Also it does appear to be in the perimeter of the poperty retaining wall as opposed to protruding on to the pavement. In the photo above it looks like the retaining garden wall extends on to the pavement. Whereas today the wall has been removed and shortened and possibly narrowed. Thats assuming it is the same property as in the above photo? Its a tricky one this!
I don't think that it is Swinley Road. I think that Rich. is thinking of 34 Swinley Road. But, I think that the bay window of 34 is higher than the bay window of the house on the photo. Additionally, there seems to be two doors between the two bay windows, whereas, there is only one door between the two bay windows when viewing 34 Swinley Road. Also, there is no land at the side of 34 for a small garage or any small structure to have been.
Ron, I strongly believe that the photograph is of Dicconson Terrace. I would say that the first house (on the corner) is 11 Dicconson Terrace. Where the car is parked is Acton Street.
Dicconson Terrace once had many trees lining the street, but most were taken down quite a number of years ago (after the 1960's).
Although number 11 no longer has that low brick wall, many of the other houses still have them. Of course, ivy covering the house is no longer regarded as fashionable and so the houses look different - but, there are still double bay windows.
I hope this helps you in your search, Ron.
I think you could be right , Ian.
It does look familiar with the view available today on google.
Sorted...Well spotted Ian..
I remember this lovely area in the 50’s when we walked from the Market Square on Whit Monday.
Rich. and Ron, I'm glad to help and comforted by your replies.
I must admit, Dicconson Terrace looks much nicer on the photograph than it looks today.
