The Wellfield Hotel, Beech Hill circa 1958.

My father Jack Bowen was the first tenant landlord of this non-residential Hotel, the first new pub to be built in Wigan for some 50 years. It had been planned just before the outbreak of the second World War but naturally this delayed things. Several licenses of other pubs had to be relinquished by the Greenall Whitley Brewery in order to obtain one for the Wellfield. My father and mother (Phyllis Bowen, nee Brown) ran the pub from February 14th 1956 until 1974.

Remember some great nights in the Wellfield. Looking at the Wellfield photos I remember so many faces but can't put names to them. By the way, this must be after 1958 since there is a minivan on the car park and this was only introduced in late 1959.
